How to Change Your Skincare For Fall

skincare for fallFall isn’t as obvious in South Florida as it is up north, but nevertheless, we do have seasonal changes that require modification of your skincare routine. While we don’t see the leaves change in color, or anticipate snow, we do see drops in temperature and humidity. Now that it’s officially fall, it’s time to make some changes.

Every skincare routine starts with cleansing so make sure you opt for a lotion-based cleanser, which will gently cleanse without stripping your skin dry. If you find yourself to still be oily in the fall, look for an non-drying, sulfate-free gel cleanser. It’s also important to continue exfoliating at least once a week. This will help remove any buildup of products, pollutants, etc. Dry skin caused by the change in weather can lead to buildup of dead skin cells, which a good exfoliant would easily remedy.

With less humidity in the air, it’s also time to add hydration back into the skin. Start by using an alcohol-free toner, which will add hydration and restore your skin’s pH, without stripping moisture. Follow this step with a heavier moisturizer. The best way to choose is by using your summer moisturizer as a guide. If you’re using a gel moisturizer in the summer, switch to a lotion. If you’re using a lotion moisturizer in the summer, switch to a cream. If you were already using a cream moisturizer, look for one that’s a bit heavier. To add even more moisture, switch out your water-based gel mask for a cream-based mask, which will offer your skin more hydration.

Please don’t skip the SPF! You might assume that with cooler temperatures that the sun isn’t as harmful, but it most certainly is. UVA rays, which can cause skin cancer and premature wrinkles, are just as strong in the fall as they are in the summer. Be sure to continue applying at least SPF 30 everyday.
