Most people don’t start facials early enough.
You should start getting facials when you hit puberty. During puberty, hormones can wreck havoc on your face, hence the lovely acne many of us get. Facials can help keep skin under control and by starting early, you can help prevent persistent acne and thus potential scarring.[hr]
You aren’t getting facials often enough.
For most people, getting facials is an afterthought. Don’t skimp on your skin! If your skin isn’t breakout-prone, you should be getting a facial every 3 months. If you have large pores, acne or oily skin, get a facial every month. This is especially important in the summertime when heat and humidity have a major impact on your skin.
Facials aren’t just for women.
If you have skin, you have pores, doesn’t matter your gender. Men should be getting facials too in order to enjoy the benefits like smoother skin, less acne, better aging.
Not all facials are created equal.
All facials tend to have similar steps (cleansing, exfoliating, extractions, etc.) but based on the esthetician performing it, you can have a very different experience. As with most things, you get what you pay for. A good deal on a facial might not always be the best option for your skin. Finding a highly qualified esthetician will be worth the investment because they’ll be able to use the right products on your skin and suggest excellent at-home care.
Preparing for a facial is important.
Avoid using highly abrasive exfoliating products within 48 hours before your facial. These products make your skin more sensitive. When making your appointment ask for a list of products to avoid and if you’re unsure about your products, bring them with you to your appointment.
Beware of extractions.
Extractions are really the only way to clear out all the gunk in your pores. Unfortunately, if performed incorrectly, they can scar you skin. Ensure that your esthetician is properly certified and has a good reputation before trusting your skin to them. Additionally tools should be cleaned and sterilized in an autoclave, which is not always the case depending on where you get your facial done. If you’re concerned, consider getting facials in a doctor’s office setting instead of a spa, their standards for estheticians are often higher.
Don’t forget about downtime.
Depending on your skin, you may have redness and swelling (from extractions) for at least 24 hrs. To be on the safe side, don’t get a facial less than a week before a big event.
